It was Okawa, who had little interest in video games to begin with, who was jealous of this success and wanted Sega out of the hardware business as far back as 1993.

Nakayama pulled the plug on Genesis in 1996, which by then was hardly selling anyway and wanted to concentrate on Saturn to compete with Sony and Nintendo. Under Nakayama the Saturn sales increased and began to draw in more interest from developers.

Then comes Stolar, who did everything he could to destroy Saturn in the US including ditching the console altogether while blocking the domestication of games. Stolar tried to sabotage the Dreamcast as well by turning away third party support, so Nakayama had him fired.

After getting rid of Stolar Dreamcast started gaining momentum in the US and was outperforming Japan. When Okawa saw this he took matters into his own hands. He fired Nakayama and made himself boss, in which his first course of action was to kill the Dreamcast and leave the hardware business completely.

Sega had become a drain of money because of Okawa's stupid $2 billion dollar GameWorks event from which the company wouldn't recover from for years. Nakayama did everything he could to keep Sega in the games industry and to get Sega away from the clutches of the parasitic CSK. He ruined the reputation killing a system that were (still) very solid in U.S., not Stolar. Sega of America made the 32X way before Stolar even dream of stepping inside Sega's HQ. It's more than stupid believe that an executive would ruin his own reputation like the way you put.

About Okawa: CSK was holder of Sega since 1984. And you're saying the guy was openly trying to sabotage company's efforts all time, this is INSANE. When he got the lead, Sega was a drain of money, much because of all crap Nakayama did (because Japanese team were envious and ashamed of American success with Mega Drive and Sonic).

"...he was a selfish, xenophobic, megalomaniac who wanted SEGA to be what HE wanted and nobody else". Are you sure we're not talking about Nakayama-san?Daniel Lemeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18280098753061120466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205838202816969337.post-30678961978188266642016-04-03T12:12:50.460-07:002016-04-03T12:12:50.460-07:00Incorrect. Re-Read the article please. Okawa pulle...Incorrect. Re-Read the article please. Okawa pulled the plug on Dreamcast and dissolved SEGA's console division the instant he took over in June 2000. Before Christmas 2000, he had already decided to discontinue the console WORLDWIDE.

It's utterly ludicrous to blame Moore and Sega of America when they have absolutely NO say over consoles and financing. That's a blissfully naive if not an incredulous weeboo statement.

SEGA of Japan had ALL say. It was Okawa and Okawa alone that killed Dreamcast. He had EVERYTHING to gain, because he wanted Sega to become a non gaming corporation. That's why he changed their name from "Sega Enterprises,Ltd" to "Sega Corporation,Inc".

It's even more ignorant to say he controlled the Japanese branch and kept Dreamcast alive in Japan until 2004, when he DIED in March 2001. By then, he had liquidated Dreamcast and piled on $3 billion dollars worth of debt on SEGA from CSK Holdings.

CSK kept SEGA until Sammy Corporation CEO/President Haijime Satomi brought SEGA for $5 billion in May 2003. Satomi literally spent half his company's assets to SAVE SEGA and pull them out of the quicksand.

He merged Sammy and SEGA together a year later, helped them pay off that $3 billion debt in just 4 years and in August 2010, he sold off all of Sammy's assets, bonds, stocks, shares to Kabushiki Kaisha SEGA, making Sammy a Wholly Owned Subsidiarity of SEGA instead of their parent.

Had Isao Okawa not died in March 2001, Sega would NOT even exist gamingwise today. Today, they'd be like NEC.snkbouthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13255327642886193169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205838202816969337.post-39614512157083675832016-04-03T12:08:55.209-07:002016-04-03T12:08:55.209-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.snkbouthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13255327642886193169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205838202816969337.post-19463354200944677082016-04-03T02:55:36.400-07:002016-04-03T02:55:36.400-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.undeadpobophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00123074316191620315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205838202816969337.post-41812981636907808052016-03-24T22:18:10.893-07:002016-03-24T22:18:10.893-07:00It's been fantastic! It's been fantastic!snkbouthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13255327642886193169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205838202816969337.post-4072526271441560832016-03-19T11:50:33.556-07:002016-03-19T11:50:33.556-07:00Well that's great to know.
